The Art of Japanese Simplicity: In Conversation with MOSAIK’s Founder Emi Schemmer

Created by founder Emi Uno Schemmer, MOSAIK blends traditional Japanese sensibilities with modern dermatological science to deliver formulas that feel intuitive, gentle and deeply effective. In this interview, we speak to Emi about the philosophy behind MOSAIK, the science that shapes each formula and the products that best express the brand’s quiet, considered approach to skincare.
Skindays: MOSAIK is “skincare for all spectrums of skin.” What was the inspiration behind launching MOSAIK?
Emi Schemmer: MOSAIK was born out of a very personal experience. Growing up in a mixed-ethnic family, I was always aware of how differently skin behaves across tones, environments, and climates. My father is a dermatologist, so discussions about skin health were constant in our home, but I rarely saw brands that reflected the diversity of skin types he treated. I wanted to create a brand that speaks to everyone, not by oversimplifying, but by understanding the mosaic of factors that make each person’s skin unique.
SD: You’ve spoken about growing up around dermatology through your family. How did that shape the brand’s philosophy day-to-day?
ES: It shaped everything. From a young age, I learned that good skin isn’t about perfection, it’s about health and balance. My father always reminded us that skin tells a story: of genetic heritage, lifestyle and diet, environment, and of course how we care for ourselves in general. MOSAIK’s approach is dermatologically informed but also emotionally aware. We focus on education, skin adaptability, and simplifying routines without compromising on efficacy. Every product is formulated to respect the skin’s natural rhythm rather than force change.
SD: Why was it important that Mosaik be formulated and made in Japan, and what does Japanese R&D enable you to do differently?
ES: Japan has a long tradition of merging science with sensorial care. The R&D culture here is meticulous, every texture, absorption rate, and pH balance is considered. Formulating in Japan allows us to integrate precision skincare science with the Japanese concept of omotenashi and in a way, shokunin—deep respect and thoughtfulness toward the user and artisanal craft/precision. It’s not just about performance; it’s about creating a ritual that feels balanced and kind.
SD: If someone tries only one MOSAIK product, which best represents the brand’s approach and why?
ES: The FaceRx Serums – they embody everything we stand for: multi-functionality, adaptability, and inclusivity. Each serum uses smart ingredients that work in harmony across different skin types and tones. They’re simple, intelligent, and yet deeply effective.
SD: Your routine framework spans Cleanse, Care, Protect, and Balance. Why this structure, and how should a new customer build their regimen?
ES: Skin health relies on rhythm, not excess. We designed this framework as a mindful guide:
- Cleanse: prepare the skin by removing buildup without stripping.
- Care: treat with targeted actives that respond to the skin’s condition.
- Protect: strengthen the barrier and shield from stressors.
- Balance: restore calm and hydration to support long-term resilience.
A customer can start with the DuoCleanser Set, then layer one of the FaceRx Serums depending on what their skin needs that day.
SD: What’s a skincare ritual you personally swear by?
ES: Cleansing with intention. It’s more than removing impurities, it’s a reset. I often use a warm face towel instead of a cleanser when my skin feels dry or tired. It’s simple, grounding, and feels Japanese in spirit. I also store my face masks and eye masks in the fridge!
SD: Bedside table essentials?
ES: My evening ritual always ends with grounding simplicity. I keep the MOSAIK FaceBalm+ by my bedside, it’s the perfect final layer to seal in moisture and calm the skin overnight. A cup of MOSAIK herbal tea helps me unwind and bring balance from within. I also use an acupressure stick to release facial tension, followed by a few minutes under a red light device to support skin recovery. It’s a quiet moment of reflection and care, a way to connect both skin and mind before rest.
SD: Looking ahead, any innovations or category expansions you’re excited to tease?
ES: Yes! We’re introducing our first Eye+ Mask, a targeted treatment formulated with active ingredients such as marine peptides, amino acids, rice ferment extracts and other powerful botanical extracts. The eye patches are made from advanced Japanese microfibre technology and feel extremely soft and in a way comforting. This product can be used under the eyes, around smile lines, or even the forehead. Those who have tested the product prelaunch – have shared incredible feedback, and so I’m very excited about this one!
SD: If customers remember one takeaway after testing Mosaik, what should it be?
