But what about the people behind the brands? Introducing Stripped Back: A new series that aims to share the story behind the brands that you love and a chance to hear directly from the founders themselves. So sit back, relax, and let us introduce you to our brands…
Skindays: What is your earliest skincare memory?
Maryam Zamani: I have loved skincare since I before I remember. My mother gave me a Lancôme tinted moisturiser as tween which I loved. Skincare has been a part of my nightly self-care ritual ever since. Regardless of the product, I prepare myself for bed by taking a bath/shower, doing my nightly skincare ritual, putting on pretty pyjamas and slipping under my cold duvet.
SK: Can you share the story behind launching your brand?
MZ: When I moved to London, I had recently finished my residency and entered my 30s. I wanted skincare with results and that is about the time Doctor brands started to pop up. I tried using a few, only to become disinterested, I felt that it was only medicating my face and did not have the ritual aspect. So I went back to my go to brand and started working with a chemist creating my own formulas to supplement that routine. My husband actually was the one who put the idea into my head and said, well if you like it, then why don’t you try your own complete formulations for your patients. That was late 2013. In early 2014 I found a formulator in London and together started making my creams; I would ask my patients and friends to try and tweaked them as I went along. And that is how MZ Skin was born.
SK: How has your background as an aesthetics doctor influenced your brand?
MZ: MZ Skin was conceived from a desire to make a precise, concise, intelligent capsule collection of scientifically backed, clinically trialled skincare that is easy to use but also has a gorgeous sensory experience to it. I do not believe you need lots of different products but rather specific, efficacious ingredients that work synergistically together. MZ Skin is free from all perceived nasties like parabens, silicones and artificial fragrances. In my clinic practice, I combine the surgical with the non-surgical but understand that skin is the canvas and foundation for all treatments and help determine the outcome of so many treatments. The goal has always been to reveal, enhance and protect the skin for beautiful, glowing, radiant skin at every age.
SK: What are some of the common skincare issues that you have encountered from clients at your practice, and how can your products help to combat these?
- Pigmentation: skincare always in combination with various light & laser treatments as well as peels
- Fine lines and wrinkles: Neuromodulators such as Botulinum Toxin to help improve lines and wrinkles caused by dynamic movement. Dermal fillers to help restore volume and help with facial contouring
- Jowling: Ultherapy (a non-invasive treatment using ultrasound) is another treatment that I use in my practice which is effective in lifting and tightening the skin sometimes in combination wiht the above
- Skin texture: again with lasers, injectables and microneedling with RF (Morpheus*)
SK: What do you predict the next big trend in skincare or facial aesthetics to be?
MZ: Medical grade devices. I think that consumers are busy. Having time to spend at the doctor’s office or even a spa is hard to find. They want to have treatments done at home at their convenience
SK: What was the first product that you created and why?
MZ: Cleanse & Clarify, Lift & Lustre, Hydrate & Nourish, Rest & Revive and Soothe & Smooth
SK: What has been your most rewarding moment while developing MZ Skin?
MZ: There are a few that come to mind, but my first day launching at Harrods September 2016 was definitely a pinch me moment. Walking through the employee entrance into an empty Harrods before the doors opened in my highest Aquazzura’s armed with bags of products and carefully placing them on my newly minted MZ Skin shelves in the apothecary room was surreal I was in the most quintessentially iconic British megastore selling my skincare products. Later that day I walked through the store with my family and my daughter who was 5 at the time saw the display and proudly told anyone who would listen, ‘that’s my mommy’s’. Unforgettable moments for sure.
SK: If you could only take 3 of your products to a desert island, what would they be and why?
MZ: Soothe & Smooth eye cream to help improve dark circles and diminish fine lines, Brighten & Perfect to improve skin tone and texture and Rest & Revive to make it look like I have slept ten hours even when I haven’t.
SK: What is the best skincare advice that you’ve personally ever received?
MZ: Always invest in sunscreen
SK: And what skincare myths do you wish would stop being perpetuated by the industry?
MZ: I think that complicated multi=step skincare regimens are not necessary and that the skin can not possibly take in too many products at once.
