Peptides: The Tiny Messengers Transforming Your Skin (And Health)

You've probably seen "peptides" on countless skincare labels, but what actually are they? Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins such as collagen and elastin. When applied to your skin, they act like little messengers, telling your cells to produce more of these essential proteins.

As we age, our natural collagen production slows down. Peptides essentially send a signal to your skin saying, "make more collagen."

Three key benefits of peptides

Firmer, plumper skin. Peptides boost collagen production, helping to restore the structure and bounce that skin loses over time.

Smoother fine lines and wrinkles. Some peptides relax facial muscles (like Botox without needles), while others rebuild the skin's foundation to reduce visible signs of aging.

Stronger skin barrier. Peptides support repair and hydration, making skin more resilient against environmental stress and sensitivity.

There are different types of peptides: some stimulate collagen production, others deliver essential minerals like copper for healing, and others protect existing collagen from breaking down.

Peptides aren't just for your face, either. Collagen peptide supplements support joint health, bone density, and muscle recovery, which is why they've become a cornerstone of wellness, not just skincare.

The best part? Peptides are gentle and well-tolerated by all skin types, including sensitive skin. They work best in leave-on products like serums and moisturizers. Just avoid using them with strong AHAs or vitamin C at the same time, as low pH can reduce their effectiveness.

How Skindays Can Help

On a personal note...

Peptides weren't always on my radar. But recently, I've noticed they keep coming up in conversations with friends. We'll be talking about skincare routines or supplements, and someone will ask: "What about peptides? What's the best way to take them?"

It made me realize how much confusion there still is around this ingredient. So here's what I've learned: there are essentially three ways to get peptides into your routine.

Topically through serums and moisturizers. This targets your skin directly. Look for peptide serums and apply them after cleansing, before your moisturizer. Consistency matters; results typically show after 4-8 weeks.

Orally through collagen supplements. Powders or capsules that support skin, joints, hair, and nails from the inside out. Studies suggest 10-20g daily for several months delivers the best results.

Through treatments like microneedling with peptide-infused serums, which allows deeper penetration and enhanced results.

Personally, I do a combination. I use a peptide serum in my evening routine and take collagen supplements daily. It's become part of my "support system" approach: actives for turnover, peptides for rebuilding, hydration to keep everything balanced. My skin feels stronger, my nails are better, and I just feel like everything is working together.

If peptides have been coming up in your conversations too, maybe it's time to give them a proper look.

xx,
