Rosacea

Rosacea is a skin condition that is caused by inflammation which causes redness and texture in the skin. It is a permanent condition but if you treat it correctly then you can minimise the degree to which it manifests on your skin.

What are the Different Types of Rosacea?

There are four sub-categories of rosacea which have distinct and overlapping symptoms, these are some of the potential symptoms you may observe:

Flushing: involuntary widening of blood vessels can lead to the sudden reddening of your skin
Persistent redness: usually appears across the cheeks and nose
Red bumps: these can be sensitive and will appear similar to acne. Although these bumps appear to be like acne they aren’t and need to be treated differently.
Visible blood vessels: blood vessels dilate more easily when you have rosacea which can make them visible underneath the skin
Eye sensitivity: eyes can appear red and feel irritated
Skin thickening with a bumpy texture: this is normally only apparent in more severe cases of rosacea

What Causes Flare-Ups?

Although rosacea is a skin condition that can be managed it’s also important to be aware of the following things that can cause flare ups:
Changes in temperature
Strenuous exercise
Alcohol
Caffeine
Stress
Direct sunlight

Sensitive Skin and Rosacea?

If you have rosacea you may also notice that you have sensitive skin which isn’t uncommon as you will likely have a damaged skin barrier. If this is the case then make sure that you use gentle, hydrating products which will not further irritate your skin.

Best Products for Calming Rosacea

There are certain product types that you should look to include in your skincare routine when combating rosacea. The key is to be gentle to protect and maintain your skin barrier and avoid products that may inflame your skin.

Cleanser

Use a gentle cleanser that doesn’t overly strip your skin. Avoid foaming or exfoliating cleansers and instead look for a cleansing balm, cream or gel cleansers.

Exfoliator

Look for a leave-on, chemical exfoliant as this won’t be abrasive on your skin. Ideally, look for one with BHAs as they help reduce redness too. If you have sensitive skin, then start with using one weekly and slowly build up your tolerance.
